The atlas contains 6 astronomical maps, 1 world-map, 2 maps of America and at the end
1 map with the flags of all countries and 5 maps with historical notes and symbolic representations
of the pope, the German emperor etc. Several maps represent nice views and plans of towns, e. g-
Lissabon, Madrid, Paris, Amsterdam, Vienna, S. P e t ers b urg, Berlin etc. The maps are en-
graved by Lotter, M. Seutter, E. Eichel. A few maps are inserted from Homann a. 0.
The single maps are all coloured and in good preservation. A few rents are mended.

The maps are designed by the renowned geographers Sansone, Baudrand
and Cantelli and bear the date of 1669—1690. America is to be found on the

The work is of the highest interest and. importance the history of the mathematical
geography and the representation of America in the 16th Century.
The large, double page map represents the whole world drawn after
the wellknown large map of Mercator, executed in a smaller scale and
without the division into degrees. The upper frame contains the title: TYPVS ORBIS
TERRARVM. On the left side in a cartouch are engraved 7 lines: Ad imitationem inagnae | Vni-
versalis Gerardi Mercato-1 ris compendiosa haec Orbis descrip- | tio facta . . . The whole left side
of the map contains America sive India Nova anno Dni. 1492 a Christophoro Columbo . .. detecta.
This map is here printed for the first time.
The 3 pages of the text contain an areal table of Germania, Belgicum, Hispania, Italia,
Francia, Anglia, Hibernia, Scotia, Dania, Suecia, Polonia, Hungaria, Dalraatia, Trassil-
vania, Turcia, Moscovia, Tartaria, Persia, India, and Europa, Asia, Africa, Peruvia,
Nova Hispania (Mexico). The areas are quoted in Millia Jugerum, an ancient acre or yoke. The
whole area of the world is quoted as 13. 134. 728 milia iugerum.
Ou the title page of this extremely rare work an old inscription: Joan. Ducker emit Franco-
furtj | mense Sept. An. 1599. | in nundinis. | Joannes Dücker or Düker was Chamberlain to the Erz-
herzog Maximilian at Innsbruck and is known as a traveller.
