MY LORD
JL-LAving ventured to dedicate the first part of this
work , notwithstanding all it's imperfe&ions, to the Anti-
quary Society of London, and having through the chan-
nel of your Lordship ( it's worthy President ) communi-
cated to that Society , and the publick the motives that
induced me to undertake this publication, I beg leave to
continue to address myself to Your Lordship in this second
volume.
By the date of my letter at the head of the firss: vo-
lume , Your Lordship will have perceived, that it w as my
intention to have published it at a much earlier period, but
having had occasion to make a Journey to England, the
work was necessarily suspended until my return to Naples,
since which time, the Situation of publick affairs, has af-
forded me but little leisure , to attend to things of this
nature.
The importance of these vases in illustrating difficult
palsages of the most ancient Grecian Authors, has been
experienced, and as the drawings on many of them, are
representations of the ceremonies used at the feasts of Bac-
chus,
