S1KKIM ROPEWAY STARTS FUNCTIONING

Muleteers to disappear gradually
Gangtok, February 26

The first ropeway in
Sikkim, regarded at the
world's highest, was open-
ed by the Maharaja this
morning. A crowd of
business men and officials
ohoered as the first car-
riage, loaded with four
oasra of Indian goods,
glided upwards into (he
mist. In another five
minutes four bales of
wool arrived from Tibet
amidst a fresh burst of
cheers. The repeway will
start bringing in a re-
venue of Hs 3 lakhs a
year, it is learnt.

Tibetan muleteers
locked on dolefully, for
to them the time had
now ooms to gradually
disappear.

It is learnt that some
of the treaties range from
30 to 160 ft. crossing
over 13,600 ft. to its ter-
mination at Thsguk( 13,000
ft.) At places tha depth
of its foundation ia oyer
14 ft and has a span of
over a mile just above
Karponang The present
oapacity of the ropeway
ia five tons per hour,
both ways. The first
seotion has a length of
6 5 miles and has oost
the Sikkim Government
Rs. 25 lakhs so far.

The ropeway will

bring 1,500 maunds of
wool and an equal amount
of Indian goods to Tha-
guk at the Tibetan frontier
daily by the end of this
year. It ia reported that
when the second section
is completed, the ropeway
will be 27 miles long and
will have 73 trestles.

TWO COUNCILLORS OF
SIKKIM RESIGN

fmm the post of Execu-
tive Councillors. They
said that the Maharaja's
plan for two Executive
Councillors and two De-
puty Eieoutive Council-
lors was not in keeping
with the demands of the
two parties.

It transpires; that
about 2 p id. on Sunday
a young girl/entered the
shop and asked for some
face oream for her pim-
ples. Being a holiday
there was only a com-
pounder in attendance.
After he had shown her

some face creams, she is
Mated to have told him
that she lived a few miles
away and as it was rain-
ing she would wait for
sometime in the shop.
She then casually asked
bim for a loan of five
rupees. When he refused,
three young men suddenly
entered the shop and
dragged tha compounder
inside a cubicle insinua-
ting that he had molested
the girl who was the wife
of one of the young men..

Taking advantage of
the scuffle that followed
the girl is said to have
opened the drawer con.
taining ca»b, removed
some money and was
about to decamp with it
when the compounder saw
her. He rushed at her
and grabbed at a bundle
in her hand, containing
one rupee notes. In the
ensuing confusion the
three young men dragged
away the girl and made
good their escape before
the compounder could
summon .any help.

From the description
given the police were
later able to arrest a
woman who gave her
name as Chhanda Chat-
terjee alias Biswaksrms.
7he police also arrested
another suspect Birbaha-
dnr Tamang alias Mails,
'the police are now on
the look out for the other
two accomplices one of
them described as the
husband of the weman.
