ELECTION TEMPO IN KALIMPONG
Gorkha League Starts Campaign
Kalimpong January 10
The Gorkha League was
last to announce its candi-
date but it was first in
starting the election cam-
paign in Kalimpong Spea-
king at the first election
meeting organised by Gor-
kha League at the Mela
ground on Wednesday,
Sri D. P. £Ui, M. L A.,
and a oandidate from
Darjeeling Constituency
stated that " the League
will fight the next elec-
tion on two main' issues.
Firstly it demands separata
administrative - unit for
Darjeeling District and
secondly recognition of
Nepali as only offioial
language of the Distript.
Traoing the history and
background of the League
Sri Rai oritioised the Cong,
ress & Communist parties.
He said that the League
was in stronger position
to day because there are
more younger blood in the
partys.
He charged Sri N. B.
Qurung for betraying the
people of Kalimpong, who
won the last elections in
the name of Gorkha
League but joined Congress
immediately after the elec-
tions.
Drawing the attention
of businessmen of Kalim-
pong Sri D. P Rai dia-
olosed that it was Sri
Gurung who tried his best
to get Kalimpong declared
as Notified area. This
move of Sri Gurung was
for his selfish interest but
that would have ruined
the town, Sri Raidisoribed
how he opposed this sinis-
ter move which would
have given a fatal blow
to the crumbling economy
of Kalimpong and also
infringed the fundamental
rights guaranteed by the
constitution. He cautioned
the businessmen against
Sri Gurung He also drew
the attention of the S.D.O.
Kalimpong, towards some
of the Government servants
specially V.L.W's taking
aotive part in election
campaign in favour of a
particular oandidate.

his speech outlined the
history of the demand of
the hill people and origin
of Gorkha League. He
stressed on the point that
nothing substantial has
bsen done for the hill
people and economically
the people are going from
bad to worse. Sri N. L.
Gurung, said, thoie who
say that Gorkha League
is weak to day, are in
dreamland. The younger
group has come forward
in plaoe of those "who
have left the party. Ha
further said the days of
those people are gone.
He said it was Sri
N. B. Gurung and hit
followers who in the past
indited the hill people
against plainsman and
whatever differences exist
to-day between Hillmen
and Plainsmen are due
to the past activities of Sri
Gurung and bis followers.
Sri C. K. Ghishing,
the oandidate for the
Parliament seat in an im-
pressive speeoh analysed
the eoonomio condition of
the people of this distriot
and oriticiBed the ruling
party and all those who
have joined Congress for
truck number or ration-
shops. He appealed to
vote for Gorkha League.

Chairman, Kalimpong Mu-
nicipality while proposing
the vote of thanks stated
that Gorkha League has no
bank balance but it has
got a v ry high plaoe in
the hearts of hill people.
Sri L. S Pradhan presided
at the meeting which was
well attended.
