PRIMARY EDUCATION IN DARJEEUNG DISTRICT

Number of Schools Raised to 561

During the S.eoond Five
Year Flan, the programme
of oateriog the primary
education was intensified
throughout the distriot in
rural areas and as a result,
the number of primary
schools where free educa-
tion was bung imparted
rose to 3H8. This involved
an expenditure of Ks.
14,17,480/,-.. Upio to the
end of Second • Five Year
Plan period there were
31 nigh schools of which-
twelve were of Higher
Seoo ldaiy type There mere
26 Junior High Schools.
6 Senior Basic Schools arid
57 Junior Bnsio s'ohools
in rural areas ami 4 in
urban areas. There were
93 Primary Soh<,ols func-
tioning in urban areas
Thus the total number of
Primary Schools in the
District upto the end of
this piriod was 661.

In the Community
Development ,Blocks for
the improvement of exist-

•wildings a sum of Rs.
1,06,700/. was spent of
whioh Rs. 51,650/- oame
as 'ocal contribution from
thj people. A sum of
Rs. 13,064.95 nP. was

spent on establishment of
schools where there were
no schools. 21 primary
sohool buildings wer ex-
tended on whioh a sum
ot Rs. 42,000/ was spent.

24 Adult Kd Mention
Centres functioned during
the 2oc*Five Year Plan
whioh produced 2tf66 Ite-
rate adults. 1 he scheme
involved an expenditure
of Rs. 37,339 »0 nP. In
Kalimpong Sub Division
6 Community Centres were
established which incurred
an expenditure of Rs
3"\«20.23 nP. As many
as 24.775 people were
benefitted by the centres.
20 Adult Night School*
functioned whioh produced
1416 adult literates. A
sum of Rs. 6600/- was
spent on these Night
Schools. For the promo-
tion of Cultural and Re-
oreational activities the
sum of Rs. 6001'/- was
spent and as many as
lfiOOO people to <k advant.

6 Area Libraries and 36
Feeder Libraries and as
many as 75,000 people
took advantage of the

soheme. The District Li-
brary, Darjeeling catered
nearly 1,26,306 people A
sum of Rs. 78,176 was
spent during 2nd plan
period as recurring expen-
diture and Rs. 39,010/-
as non-recurring expen-
diture.

The Janata- College,
Kalimpong by the end of
this period had trained
up 474 young boys and
girls in social servioes.
Each trainee was granted
stipend of Rs. 30/- per
month. There is a Junior
Basio School at Kalim-
pong whioh had trained
531 teaohers inoluding 95
women teachers. T h e
scheme involved an expen-
diture of Rs. 2,60,238/ .
There is provision of an-
other 00 people for traioing
in the Junior Ranis Train-
ing College.

During the 2nd plan
period a Post Graduate
Teachers' Training Cnlleae
was also established in
Darjeeling known as Katn-
krisbna B.T. College with
some Govt. aid.

The Physical Educa-
tion and Youth Welfare
Branch of the Education
Directorate spent Rs.
66.600/- with Be. 12,521/
as public contribution on
construction of four play
grounds whioh are already
in use.
