DEMAND FOR MERGER OF "OLD SIL1GURI

Darjeeling, August 1.

The Darjeeling District
Committee of the North
Bengal Chamber of Com-
merce and Industrial has
•ubmittad a memorandum
to State Chief Minister
in wbioh they have re-
quested Gorernment to
merge the locality known
as 'Old Siliguri' including
the Saktigarh Colony and
the hew Board Guage
Station with the Siliguri
Sub Division from Jalpai-
guri Diatriot. In the said
memorandum several dif-
ficulties caused by the
existing position of these
plaoas have been shown.
In the first place, it
sejri these plaoes are too
far from the territorial
police station. The people
of the localities are also
earning their livelihood
from different souroes of
occupation at Siliguri and
they have hardly any
relation with Jalpaiguri
Sab-Division. These people
are put to extreme dif-
ficulties in availing help
and servioe from the Raj.
ganj Police Station
and even for obtaining
neeeasary food and ration
-card court attendance in
eenneotion with oivil, cri-
minal and revenue matter*
at Jalpaiguri. There is also
no communication to go

to Rajganj Polioe Station
or to go to Jalpaiguri.
excepting the Bus Servioe
which is not only difficult
but also expensive.

It has been pointed
out in the memorandum
that from the administra-
tive point of view, it
will be more convenient
for the authorities to
administrate the area if
be merged under Siliguri
Sub Division. And at the
ssme time it will helpful
for the people from many
points of view.

In another memoran-
dum to the . Chairman,
Railway Board the Com-
mittee said that they
have been "served" pained
to note that the New
Siliguri Junotion. The
memorandum has shown
in clear terms the diffi-
culties that may be caused
by the New Name. The
Committee has requested
the railway authorities to
re name the station as
New SiHguri Junction for
the greater interest of
larger population, Com.
meroe, Industries, Agri-
culture and equity and
justioe.

DISTRICT EMPLOYNENT
COMMITTEE

The first meeting of
the reconstituted District
Committee on Employ-
ment was held at Dar-
jealing under the presi-
dency Sri B. C. Mukherjee,
Deputy Commissioner. Sri
B. K. Chattsrjee, Director
of National Employment
Servioe, West Bengal at-
tended the meeting.

Representatives of
different Trade Unions
and the Seoretary Darjee-
ling Branoh of the Indian
Tea Association took part
in the discussion and sug-
gested various ways and
means for the solution of
the unemployment prob-
lem in the district. Set-
ting up of Employment
Information Centres at
Kaliinpong and Kurseong,
operation of mobile ex-
changes, setting up a Go-
vernment sponsored Ty-
ping-oum.tjborthand " Ins-
titution at Darjeeling were
also disonssed.'

The meeting also con-
sidered the question of
setting up of an Imple-
mentation Sub-Committee
to enquire into complaints
from employment seekers.
