Dome of Cathedral of St. fohn the Divine

slightly inclined from the ver-
tical and set on edge, the
work at this point resembled
the laying of an ordinary
vertical circular wall. As
the work advanced exterior
scaffolds were built up almost
vertically but following the
angle, until the overhang
reached a stage where the
surface had become flat
enough for men to work on
it directly. From this point
on the men were supported
on the incomplete arching
shell of tile, reaching over
the edge of the last course
to lay.

This extraordinary situa-
tion was made possible by

reason of the fact that m the
ingenious method of con-
struction followed in overlaying the courses the The first pendentive course was laid May i, 1909;
shell was for all practical purposes monolithic, the last, June 7; the dome was completed August 16.
