Sarcophagus of the usual striated type. In the centre within a
clipeus is the bust of a middle-aged woman with the coiffure of the early
third century A. D., leaving the ears bare. She is dressed in a tunic and
a mantle, from which the r. forearm and the 1. hand project. With the
1. hand she holds a roll, which she touches with the extended first two
fingers of the r. The eyes are rendered and the eyebrows hatched.
Below the clipeus are two dramatic masks, averted, with fillets round
the hair.
At each corner is a genius of death, figured as a cupid, facing
towards the centre and seated on a rock in an attitude of sleep (Amor-
Somnus). They rest their r. and 1. hands respectively on the other arm,
the hand of which holds a wreath. From a hole in each rock a rabbit
issues and nibbles at fruit on the ground. Each end is adorned with
a large basket filled with fruit.
The lid, which is of a different marble, has a square panel in the
centre containing the inscription. To each side are two pairs of sea-
monsters, one pair behind the other; to the left a pair of sea-horses
with marine foliage at the junction of horse and serpent, followed by
a pair of sea-bulls with similar foliage; to the r. sea-antelope and sea-
tigers with foliage as before.
Fair work of the first quarter of the third century A. D. The lid may
be slightly earlier.
Found in 1744 or 1*745 in the cemetery of Callistus and given to
the Museum by Benedict XIV.
