IV. SECONDO RIPIANO
1. RELIEF WITPI Hzzoczr/c OF HADRIAN (pi. 105).
H. 2-67 m., Br. 2-09 m. Luna marble. Restored: (1) Emperor (in marble):
r. hand, lower part of arm and part of shoulder, fingers of 1. hand and part of roll,
several patches on tunic and the jzz^^Zzzz'. The former restoration of r. side of
head was removed in 1921, revealing a profile which was almost certainly that of
Hadrian, and a plaster cast from a head of that emperor has now (1922) been
attached. (2) Bearded man in top 1. corner (in marble) : 1. edge of r. shoulder, Angers
of r. hand ; the head worked over. (3) Bearded man with spear in 1. foreground (in
marble) : patch on forehead near r. eyebrow, nose, beard on r. cheek, upper part of
spear, fingers of 1. hand, r. shoulder and arm, lower part of r. leg, patches on tunic
and cloak. (4) Boy before emperor (in marble) : nose, lips, chin, 1. cheek, greater
part of 1. lower arm, part of r. lower arm, both hands, patches on ZZ^ya. L. foot has
been broken off, but is possibly antique, (g) Youth on r. (in marble) : lower part of
face with nose, chin, and half of cheek, forehead, 1. eye, and curl near 1. ear ; the
remainder of head worked over. Most of 1. breast, 1. lower arm, patches on drapery.
(6) Man behind youth, 2nd from r. : (in marble) forehead, r. eye, (in plaster) tip of
nose. The face worked over. (7) Man high up in background, 2nd from 1. (in
marble) : r. eye and patch on forehead above it, nose, lips. Edge of relief damaged
on r., one column of temple facade missing, though part of capital remains. On 1. of
temple is a roughly vertical break which runs down to shoulder of second tigure from
r., where it divides, one branch passing down shoulder of this figure, across r. elbow
of youth, to r. hand of boy, thence across lower part of emperor to his r. ankle, and
Hadrian, dressed in tunic and toga, stands to r. on a yz<gyyy/zzy, which
is restored, and delivers an zz/Zczz/zb. The moustache remaining on his
upper lip indicates that he was bearded, and the small curls above the
forehead show the normal Hadrianic arrangement: eye-pupils rendered.
Behind him is a bearded man, with a fillet round his hair, who stands to
r. on the yzz^yyy/zzy, and in the background is a beardless man who also
stands to r. In the foreground behind the yzzg^ryy/zzy a bearded man
dressed in a short tunic and cloak stands to r., holding a spear (restored)
in his 1. hand. Facing the Emperor a boy in tunic and toga stands to 1.
Behind him is a youth with drapery round his lower limbs and over his 1.
shoulder. His features are ideal and his head is circled by a fillet. He
