his head to the !. and extends his r. arm as if to urge on the horseman.
In his 1. hand he carries two hunting-spears. Beyond him a huntsman
dressed iike the man first described seizes a stag by both horns, pressing his
!. knee on the animal's haunches, while a hound attacks it in front. Below
is a small shrub and behind in the background a tree.
The last group is composed of a stag and two hinds, which rush to
r., and of a horseman in the background, who wears a cloak with hood
drawn over his head. He rides to r. in pursuit. The scene is closed by
a net made of thick rope. It is fastened on the 1. to the bush mentioned
above and on the r. to a tree at the extremity of the picture.
Front of lid decorated with similar but unfinished scenes, and divided
in the middle by a square uninscribed name-plate. On the left the figures
are merely sketched in outline, on the right they are roughly blocked out.
Fair work of the fourth century A. D. The facial types and the cut
of the hair resemble those of Constantine and his sons. For sarcophagi

Provenance unknown. Formerly in the Museo Capitolino (V/zzzza^

1. BUST OF ROMAN LADY (pi. 25).
H. .59 m. Greek marble. Unrestored. The head has been broken off and
reset.
On a bust draped with a tunic, fastened at the r. shoulder, and
mantle, the head of a still young woman, turned to r. Hair parted in the
middle and waved, ending behind in a plaited coil. A lock falls on the
neck behind each ear and behind the roll of hair in front. Cheeks full ;
chin round and receding; mouth tightly closed ; nose slightly aquiline ;
eyebrows incised ; iris and pupil rendered.
Moderate work of the late Antonine period. There are no grounds
for regarding the head, with P. E. Visconti, as a portrait of Manlia
Scantilla.
Found in the Vigna Belardi near S. Croce in Gerusalemme.

2. ALTAR OF THE LARES AUGUSTI (pi. 26).
FI. 1-043 m., L. -6g8 m., (side) .638 m. Marble, Restored: upper
part at the back, and the upper corner at each side, patches in front.
On the front of the altar within a panel is a scene of sacrifice. Two
veiled and wreathed figures, dressed in tunic and toga, stand on each side
of a wreathed altar. Their r. hands meet over it and rest on the offering (?).
These are the four mentioned in the inscription. Behind
the altar stands a veiled figure playing the double flute. On the 1. in the
