for regarding this head, with P. E. Visconti, as a portrait of Didia Clara;
and the likeness which he noticed between this head and no. 1 is probably
accidental.
Found in the former Villa Palombara near the Piazza Vittorio
Emanuele.

4. BUST OF FAUSTINA THE ELDER (pi. 25).
H. -68 m. Marble, Restored : nose. Head broken off and reset.
On draped Antonine bust head of Faustina turned to the r.; eye-
brows incised; iris and pupil rendered. Hair arranged in the manner
usual with this Empress. The bust is draped with a tunic fastened at the
r. shoulder and a mantle, one fold of which lies across the breast.
Moderate work.
Found during the making of Via Principe Eugenio.

5. COLOSSAL HEAD OF A ROMAN [Carinus ?] (pi. 22).
II. (to restoration) .4^ m. Luna marble. Restored : edge of neck in front.
The head, made to set into a statue, looks to the r. with the eyes
directed somewhat upwards. The short hair is roughly incised with little
strokes of the chisel. The beard is rendered in small curls and leaves
the lower lip bare. The moustache is incised. The iris and pupil are
rendered. Two wrinkles cross the forehead horizontally.
Effective work of the middle of the third century A.D. Bernoulli
rightly rejects the identification of the head as a portrait of Galiienus.
Recently the name Carinus has been proposed by Delbrtick.

6. ROMAN PORTRAIT BUST (pi. 24).
II. -42gm. Greek marble. Restored: lower part of nose. The ears are
damaged and the marble on the left side is split from the corner of the mouth along
the neck to the back of the neck. Surface of marble much worn. The pedestal of
^zyzb is modern.
On an unbroken bust of Julio-Claudian form head of a beardless
old man, turned somewhat to the r. Hair cut close and roughly indicated
with the chisel. Eyes small and narrow. Deep furrows from nose to
mouth. Neck wrinkled. There is no ground for the identification of the
head with C. Domitius Ahenobarbus, husband of Agrippina and father of
Nero, which was proposed by P. E. Visconti. Fair work of the end of
the Republic.
Found in 1872 in the Castro Pretorio.

7. PORTRAIT BUST OF SABINA (pi. 25).
H. -g4m. Pentelic marble. Restored: nose, the greater part of the diadem,
part of knot of hair, piece on neck below chin, large piece on bust which has been
broken and patched. The head has been broken oft and reset.
