17. BALANCE (pi. 116).
Bull, H. -08 m.; Female head, H. .076 m.
The balance is preserved in all its parts, i. e. the dish, the triple
chain which supports it, and the axis with the weight in the form of
a female head. The fore-part of a bull served to hold it suspended.
The bull appears to be galloping outward. Its mane is in relief marked
with incised strokes.
The female head as weight is that of a young woman with hair
parted, waved in ridges, and rolled up at the back, with one small lock
escaping on to the nape of the neck on either side. The features are
rather coarsely treated; eyes somewhat hat, lips pouting.
Fair work in excellent preservation.
Found in 1877 in the Villa Aldobrandini on the Quirinal, and
presented by Prince Aldobrandini.

18. SIREN (pi. 117).
H. -18 m. Attachment of furniture. R. wing broken.
The hair is waved back, rolled up behind and bound with a ribbon.
The Siren is perched on a lion's paw which rests on a small base.
Inferior work, much corroded.
19. FORE-PART OF HIPPOPOTAMUS (not illustrated).
H. -164 m.
Companion piece to no. 2g (q. v.), but more damaged. The 1. leg
is broken at the knee, the r. from the socket.
Found in 1872 in the Villa Aldobrandini.
20. HEAD OF A MULE (pi. 115).
H. -ig m.
From the top of the end-rest of a couch (see on -Arc/zaf, no. 11).
21. HEAD OF A TIGER (pi. 118).
H. .043 m. The ferrule of a litter pole or other object.
The jaws are open in a snarl. Two long lines start from the back
of the head and diverge towards the inner corners of the brows. The
hair below the ears and round the neck is indicated by strands in slight
relief.
Superficial work.
Found in 1889 in the Via Merulana.

22. BUST OF SlLENUS (pi. 117).
H. -102 m. Probably from theof a couch.
Bald Silenus, with tangled beard, bushy brows, thick flat nose; his
head is turned sharply to 1. He wears a wreath of ivy with two clusters
of berries in front, and the leaves stand out at the sides in full relief.
Over either shoulder hang the ends of the wide /<2f?zM<? which fasten the
