her r. hand she holds a round object (apple or pomegranate ?), in her 1. a
bird. The attributes suggest Kore or Aphrodite.

136. SlLENUS ON MULE (pi. I2o).
The fat Silenus reclines on his beast, who is covered with a saddle-
cloth with scalloped edge. With his 1. hand he holds a wine-skin. Very
rough.
Found in 1877 near S. Antonio, Esquiline.

H. -17 m. Broken: 772^3/333^.
Flowing hair, close beard, eyes with incised pupils, gaze directed
upward to his r. Clay, deep red.

138. PART OF FEMALE TORSO (pi. 120).
H. .19 m.
Upper part of the body nude. The drapery comes from the 1.
shoulder and is wrapped round the lower limbs ; the fold hanging in front
would probably pass over 1. arm. Abdominal region full and round.
The figure is modelled, not moulded. Much damaged. The flesh was
covered with a cream slip, the drapery crimson.

Shape, as no. gQ. Female head with full locks. Sprays forming
volutes above and below. Traces of red background. Much damaged.
Found in 1875 on the Esquiline.

H. .08 m. Broken : r. side.
The head is inclined towards the r. shoulder, the glance directed
upwards to 1. Large dimple in chin. There are traces of dark brown in
the hair, which is crowned with (?) laurel leaves.

Hair waved back under V^<273g. Features well formed. Round
earrings. Early Hellenistic.
