72 MEMOIRS OF THE LIFE OF
is six feet high, and less than sive in breadth,
both for the Count of Rivadavia. Mengs finished
this painting in a particular style never used by
him before. The situation in which it was to
be placed has a iky light which strikes upon the
eyes of the spedtators; for this reason, he forced
nature a little, made great masles, and marked
the parts with great force. It appears a paints
ing after the style of Michael Angelo, when he is
not overcharged, or of Raphael when he wither
to combat with that of the Conflagration of
Borgo.
He did the Portrait of the Duke of Alva in
hals figure.
And two more of the Dutchess of Huescar,
now the Dutchess of Arcos.
Another for the Dutchess of Medina Coeli,
seated on a chair.
Another os a sigure entire in a masque habit,
for the Marchioness of Llano. '•
And for the same Lady another of hals fi-
gure.
He painted likewise the Portrait of Don Peter
Campomanes, larger than half sigure.
Another of Don Philip de Castro, of half fi-
gure, but of that the head only is finished.
He did a Madonna in grief, for Don Antonio
de la Quadra, Dire&or General of the Posts.
A Saint Peter seated, of natural size, he gave
to his barber, Peter Martinez.
He finished likewise in the Palace a large
painting of the Ascension of our Lord, begun at
Rome by commission from the Court of Dresden.
