JAROSŁAW BODZEK

The seated personage depicted on the obverse is wearing a tiara/kyrbasia/
trousers/ a sarapis' and a sleeved coat reaching down to his thighs. The finał
item couid perhaps be identihed as a candys/ or morę probabiy as the shorter
coat known as a kaunaka (gaunaka)/ AH of these elements were part of the Ira-
nian cava)ry dress. The man holds a fiower in his right hand, whiist the ieft bears
a staff extending diagonally downwards. The horseman depicted on the reverse
is aiso wearing an Iranian riding costume consisting of a tiara/kyrbasia, sarapis
and anaxyrides (the hnai ełement only partly visibie). His pose seems to be some-
what iess rigid than that of the horseman depicted on the weh-known "Great King/
iranian Horseman" issue (PI. 1, Fig. 4).'° The horseman's right arm, which holds
a javetin, is bent at a 90 degree angle and a fringed saddlecloth (known as a cćMz?)
seems to be outiined on the horse's back." The horse's manę is probabiy plaited ac-
cording to Persian customA it is not possible to write the same of the horse's taił,
sińce the iower part of the image is out of view, making it impossible to precisely
determine certain iconographic detaiis. it is aiso unciear in which attitude the horse
is shown. One can only speculate ffom the horseman's pose that it is perform-
ing a short "Greek" gallop, as is the case in the weii-known Tissaphernes' bronze
Athena/Horseman issues of Tissaphernes (Pi. 1, Fig. 3)A The coin seems to be
