The Finds of Greek and Roman Provincial
Coins in Belarus
The coins of ancient Greece are the oidest numismatic objects tound in the
territory of the present-day Republic of Belarus. Since they are very rare as com-
pared with the finds of Roman coins, their indów into a territory so remote from
the Mediterranean world is particularly intriguing. At the present moment, it would
be difdcult to give any conclusive answer to the issues of the time and routes of
the influx of the Greek coins into the territory of Belarus, but at least some of them
may have arrived there even before the mass indów of Roman coins.
The dnds of Greek coins in Belarus were drst mentioned by Genrikh Khristo-
forovich Tatur. In his account of the archaeologica! artefacts drom the area of the
Mińsk Province of the Russian Empire, among other dnds he noted "Greek, Mace-
donian, and Byzantine" coins, including some "coins of the Greek colonies on the
Black Sea coast."' Unfortunately, his description olTered no specidc information
on those dnds. The drst generał information relating to the dnds of ancient Greek
coins in Belarus appeared in an article by V.N. Ryabtsevich (1968),^ and later on,
in the 1990s, in the articles and studies by L.D. PoboE,^ where they were discussed
alongside some other ancient coins. The dnds of Greek coins in Belarus, along
