The Early-Medieval Silver Hoard
from the Enyirons of Gniezno. Islamie Coins
FOREWORD
In 1960, the Numismatic Cabinet of the National Museum in Kraków ob-
tained coins from the collection of Zygmunt Zakrzewski.' Apart from the coins
of the Piast dynasty, which formed the core of the gift, the donation also included
ancient, West-European, and Islamie coins as well as some jewellery from finds
located in Poland3 Among them, in f ve pre-WWII boxes, were items described
as found in "an excavation near Gniezno, acquired from the clockmaker Kruger."
Zygmunt Zakrzewski described the fnd in his A/cwoA:
"Several months later, Kruger invited me once again to Gniezno, as he ac-
quired a new Hacksilber hoard. I purchased the fnd without much deliberation. It
contained several pieces of silver, several beads, and morę than 300 coins. It was
very peculiar, different from other hoards. There were no Polish coin types and be-
side the well recognizable German, Hungarian, Bohemian, and AngIo-Saxon speci-
mens, there were also some unknown crudely struck coins, which are commonly
called Barbarie. [...] This fnd from the vicinity of Gniezno (Kruger could not tell
me where exactly it was found) included morę or less 50 such 'Barbarie' coins.
