UN NUOVO RITROVAMENTO DI ANFORA NEL SITO
LAGUNARE YENEZIANO: CHIESE BRUCIATE

Abstract: This paper was prompted by the discovery of an amphora in the Venetian lagoon,
in a place called Chiese Bruciate (fig. 1). This is a continuation of analysis carried out on
amphorae found in many places within the northern lagoon. The amphora from Chiese
Bruciate, which is currently under water, is identical to the piece discovered in the nearby
Riga channel [Modrzewska 2004]. In this area many fortifications in form of walls madę of
pottery shards and wooden stakes occur. The amphorae found at Chiese Bruciate and the
Riga are identical (fig. 2, 3). Both obviously represent late roman imports from Asia Minor.
Later, this type was replaced by the Late Roman 2 type amphorae, which also freąuently
occur in the lagoon. The findings of these late roman and byzantine amphorae are proof
that the trade route in the direction of the upper Adriatic area was still intact during the
barbarie raids. The reuse of such amphorae to strenghen dams against flooding hint at
changes in the natural conditions of the lagoon in the lat antiąue period.

Specificita dei ritroyamenti lagunari

II problema dei ritroyamenti provenienti dalia laguna di Venezia e ąuello dato
della mancanza della stratigrafia che normalmente siamo abituati ad avere nei
ritrovamennti della terraferma. La laguna veneziana ha anche la sua stratigrafia
specifica, che e stata studiata fin dai tempi degli scavi polacchi intrapresi negli
anni sessanta del XX secolo [Leciejewicz, Tabaczyńska, Tabaczyński 1977;
Modrzewska 2000a, 11-54]. Dopo anni sono stati svolti gli studi di verifica
stratigrafica basata sui dati geologici e ceramiche torcellane [Ferretti, Mod-
rzewska, Pianetti 2005; Modrzewska 2000b]. Finora ąuesti primi scavi lagunari
sono il punto di riferimento per i ritroyamenti nelle isole lagunari [Fersouch,
