CERAMIKA RĘCZNIE LEPIONA. TANAIS 1999-2005*

Abstract: The author analyses some ceramic findings recorded during archaeological
research in Tanais (Russia) led by Polish archaeologists from The Antiąuity of Southeastern
Europę Research Center and Institute of Archeology, Warsaw University from 1999 to
2005. Significant part of the whole ceramic materiał is handmade ware, which can be divided
into groups in dependence of relations between rim, neck or collar, body and base. Typology
for vessels from Tanais based on this relations was created by T.M. Arsenewa.
Statistic researches show that the most popular group of vessels, in entire period of existing
of ancient Tanais (3rd century BC-3rd century AD), were those with neck smoothly widen
into rim (Group B). Unfortunately, because of stratification of trench XXV - layers
from 3rd century BC-3rd century AD are disordered by numerous pits - there is no
possibility to make detailed analysis which could let us to establish duration and
dynamics of changes in particular types of vessels.
Handmade ware from Tanais reveal the closest analogies with ceramics from lower Dniepr
region, where similarly to Tanais the most common are vessels on „foot” (type I ) and
vessels decorated on rim with fingernail hollows and with cuts or knobs. Similarity is also
seen in the shape of the vessels. Whereas differences are noticed in lack of vessels without
separated neck (group A) on lower Dniestr region.
Moreover, the author of this paper would like to emphasize that thesis very often repeated
in Russian archeology, that in pottery of Bosphorian Kingdom from 4th century BC to 2nd
century AD dominated wheel madę vessels, in case of Tanais is not true. For all Tanais
periods handmade pottery is the biggest group of table and kitchen wares.
Key: Tanais, handmade wares, Bosphorian Kingdom.
