THE L0R1CA SEGMENTATA FINDS FROM
THE HEADQARTERS BUILDING AT NOVAE*
Abstract: Testimonies concernig the use of the lorica segmentata in the legionary fortress at
Novae are numerous and come from different contexts. The analysis of the context of the
assemblage from the pit in Room Cz has brought new information which resulted in
a change of the dating. Tadeusz Sarnowski dated the pit and deposition of the materiał to
the time after arriving of legio I Italica to Novae [Sarnowski 2002, 165], Materiał which has
been presented here, particulary animal bones, pottery and a coin allows to datę the pit for
the last yers of the legio VIII Augusta presence at Novae. In opinion of the author of this
paper the deposition of the items from Pit 13 took płace in AD 69. Most probably the pit in
Room Cz is a rubbish pit, where wastes after intentionał cleansing of the area were thrown
by soldiers of the Eighth Legion. Four hypotheses may be put forward about the presence of
described materiał in the pit:
- wastes from an intentionał demolition of the fortress by the Eighth Legion were thrown
to an already existing pit;
- the materiał was deposited in a hastily dug pit during the preparations to leave the
camp;
- the items constitute the remains after the invasion from AD 69-70 period;
- the pit was dug and filled by the soldiers of the legio I Italica.
The first hypothesis is the simplest, the most convincing and the best to explain the
described facts. Therefore, the lorica segmentata fragments can be an important tracę of the
abandonment of Novae by the legio VIII Augusta, and one of the latest remains of this unit at
the site.

Archeological research in the Roman legionary base at Novae delivered
during last exploration campaigns many finds of Roman defensive armament.
