A piece of iron sheet with a broken lobate hinge riveted to it (No. 2) has no
parallels in Novae. The only hinges found in the scamnum tńbunorum at Novae
have been separated from iron parts of a cuirass and in the present State are
without iron plates [Genćeva 2000, pi. VIII, 1, 2]. One find from the Corbridge
hoard shows similar damages (the hinge is broken and crooked) [Robinson 1975,
174, pl. 485; Bishop, Coulston 1993, 89, fig. 52,1]. Bronze tie loops similar to Nos.
3-6 are often found on military sites. Similar items were unearthed in the
scamnum tńbunorum at Novae [Genćeva 2000, pl. VIII, 3, 4, 5, 6]. Close parallels
are known from other sites: Camuntum [Grunewald 1981, pl. 18, fig. 21], Hood
Hill, Risitissen and Corbridge [Bishop, Coulston 1993, 89, fig. 52, 29, 30, 31, 35],
Caerleon [Evans, Metcalf 1992, 116, pl. 34-44], and Longthorpe [Frere, Joseph
1974, 61, fig. 26, 31],
The tie loop (No. 4) with a fragment of a corroded iron piąte has close
analogies in Camuntum [Grunewald 1981, pl. 18, fig. 21, 22]. Lońca segmentata
tie loops are known from other sites in Lower Moesia, e. g. from Ulpia Oescus
[Kabakćieva 2000, 39, pl. II, 14].

4. The archaeological and historical context of the finds
from the pit in Room Cz

The lońca segmentata finds from Room Cz have an uniąe context. The
analysis of this context can provide us with new information about the use and
circulation of armament in the legionary base at Novae, but also about history of
the site during the civil war (AD 69-70), when it was abandoned by the legio VIII
Augusta, and reocuppated by the legio I Italica. Deposition of those items could
have been accomplished by the soldiers of the legio I Italica, who threw to it
wastes and rubbish left by their predecessors [Sarnowski 2002, 165]. Now a new
hypothesis about deposition of this assembly can be put forward.
The pit in Room Cz had been dug out before the construction of the principia
in Novae. The finds from the pit are typical for the lst century AD. They are
linked to the activity of the legio VIII Augusta [Sarnowski 2003a, 74].
The materiał from the pit in Room Cz can be connected with abandonment of
the castra by the legio VIII Augusta in AD 69, which took part in the civil war
supporting Vespasianus. This opinion can be supported by the analysis of animal
bones from the pit. An assembly found here is different from those in the pit
under Rooms Bw and Dw [Gręzak, Lasota-Moskalewska 1998, 208-209; Gręzak,
Piątkowska-Małecka 2006, 43]. The interpretation of both assemblies is different
- bones from Room Cz are remains of preparation and conservation of food
supplies, and those from the pit under Rooms Bw and Dw are kitchen rubbish
[Gręzak, Lasota-Moskalewska 1998, 208-209; Gręzak, Piątkowska-Małecka 2006,
