^ Sketching Children ^

Children have much larger heads in pro-
portion to the rest of the figure, as the skull
does not grow as rapidly as the body, arms and
legs.

The body is longer in proportion to the
legs than in the adult.

The abdomen is large and round.

The spine is straighter.

The arms and legs are tapering to wrists
and ankles.

Babies’ flesh has many creases and dimples.

The proportion of the figure is:

Head i—trunk—legs i in baby’s figure.
At birth: 2-7 height of adult
At 3 years height of adult
At 6 years % height of adult

As the child grows, the arms and legs
lengthen in proportion, the body grows faster
than the head, all the curves sharpen, until
with age the face and figure tend to become
angular, if not fat and sagging the flesh
hangs more loosely and hollows form in tem-
ples, cheeks, shoulders and other parts be-
tween the bony prominences.
