Pius VII. greatly embellished it. The great courtyard
is surrounded on three sides by a portico with 44 pi-
lasters. The fourth side is of the Ionic order. From
the portico begins the double staircase; that on the
right conducts to the royal saloon, painted by Lan-
franco and by Saraceni. For admission to see the
State Apartments see page 7. From it we enter the
Cappella Paollna, designed by C. Maderno.
There are other rooms with frescoes and pictures by
the best authors; a chapel painted in fresco by Guido;
several rooms ornamented with modern pictures and
sculptures. The garden is adorned with fountains and
statues, and is a kilometer in circumference. On leav-
ing we have on the left the
Palazzo della Consults (no. 63) by designs of
Fuga. This is the Foreign Office. Next is
Palazzo Rosplgliosi (no. 65) built by Fl. Ponzio
and enlarged by C. Maderno. On the ceiling of the
pavilion in the garden is the celebrated fresco « l'Au-
rora » by Guido Reni; in the same room are four land-
scapes by Brill, and the triumph of Love and Fame by
Tempesta. In this as in other rooms of the palace,
there are pictures, ancient sculptures, etc. There are
also fragments of paintings from the Baths of Constan-
tine on which this palace was built. It is open to the
public on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9 to 3.
Descending to the Via Nazionale and crossing over
by the little garden in the centre of the street (where
we may see a fragment of the walls of Servius Tul-
lius), we see in the hollow the
Church offst. Catherine ofsiena. Erected
in 1563, from designs of Gio. B. Soria. The interior is
magnificent, rich in marbles and adorned with Corin-
thian pillars. A double staircase leads up to'the door.
The paintings are of decided mediocrity. The heart
of Daniel O'Connell is preserved in this church. The
street before us now is Via Panisperna. To the
right is
