EXCURSIONS
IN THE
ENVIRONS OF ROME
FROM THE PORTA S. SEBASTIANO
APPIAN WAY.
We have already in our Sixth Day's Excursion, des-
cribed this road as far as the Basilica of St. Sebastian,
we will therefore begin here with the ruins close to
this Church, but on the opposite side of the road.
Circus of Romulus, sou of Maxeutlus,
built A. D. 811 This ruin is one of the most perfect
on the Appian Way, and we can easily trace the
circus all round. Its extreme length was 1600 feet,
and the breadth 260, the spina being placed obliquely.
There were seats for 18,000 spectators, and the prin-
cipal entrance faced the road. Two towers flanked
this entrance; the carceres were also on this side,
and there were also three other gates two at the
sides and one at the extreme end. The Obelisk, now
in the Piazza Navona, originally stood here. Near
the Circus is the
Temple of Romulus, which seems to have
been dedicated to the same personage as the circus.
The subterranean of the portico and of the cella are in
a good state. At a little distance upon an elevation
we perceive the
