Tempio della Tosse, a small circular edifice
of the v or vi century; it is well preserved and has
been a Christian church.
Villa, d' Este, built by order of Cardinal Ippolito
d'Este in 1549. There are some frescoes (greatly in-
jured) by Zuccari, Muziano and others. The gardens
are very fine and are open to the public. Fee V? franc.
Fifteen kilom. from Tivoli is
Vieovaro with the ruins of a bridge and some of
the walls of the ancient Varia. Seven kilom. distant is
the village called Licenza, in whose vicinity was the
Villa d' Orazio, which he so often celebrated in
his poetry. From Tivoli, re-ascending the Anio, we
come to
Subiaco (Inns: la Pernice and 1'Europa). A city
of 6000 inhabitants situated in a most picturesque po-
sition, upon the side of a villa of Nero, which contained
three artificial lakes. There are some convents greatly
worth visiting for their architecture and for some
ancient monuments. In that of St. Scolastica, the most
celebrated of all, the first book was printed in Italy
(Lattanzio 1465). Not far distant is the lake Celano.
FROM THE PORTA MAGGIORE.
Leaving Rome by the Porta Maggiore two roads
present themselves : the Prenestina to the left, and the
Labicana to the right. Following the first, we come
to the ruins of
Tor de' Sehiavi: it probably made part of a
Villa of the Gordians. We then cross the
Ponte di Nona of very ancient Roman construc-
tion, wonderful for its preservation, and we arrive
at the Osteria (Inn) dell'Osa. Following the Via La-
bicana, on going out of the Porta Maggiore, we come
to the Tor Pignattara. At S. Oesareo, the road di-
vides, that on the left leads to
