of Italy. Here was a celebrated temple to Fortune
and the oracle called Sorles Praenestinae. The Bar-
berini Palace contains some inscriptions, some statues
and an old mosaic. Many interesting ruins are to
be seen in its environs; and from the Castel St. Peter
we enjoy an enchanting view.
Frascati (Inns: Hotel Frascati, Villa Zaccala, and
Albergo di Londra). A city of upwards 5000 inha-
bitants, situated on the slope of the mountains, in a
healthy and invigorating situation; there are some
charming villas The Villa Aldobrandini designed
by I. della Porta has some paintings by D'Arpino.
In the Villa Falconieri there are some paintings
by Maratta. The Villa Ruffinella contains some an-
tiquities and some inscriptions. In the vicinity we
find
Tuseolo, a town of great antiquity, devastated
at the close of the xn century, There are the re-
mains of an amphitheatre, of a forum and of a thea-
tre. Returning we may visit the convent of Camal-
doli, founded by Paul V. A road crosses a fine forest
and conducts from Frascati to
Grotta Ferrata, a small village with the church
of St. Maria, belonging to the Greek monks of the
order of. St. Basil Domenichino painted here some
celebrated frescoes. There is also a picture by Ann.
Caracci. Six kilom. distant is
Marino, a town of 6500 inhabitants, in an elevated
position. In the cathedral there is a St. Bartholomew
by Guercino. In the church of the Iloly Trinity, a
picture by Guido. Five kilom. from Marino is
Castel Gandolfo (Hotel and Restaurant Du-
rante). A village of 1500 inhabitants in a most
agreeable situation. Urban VIII. had a large palace
constructed by C. Maderno. The principal church
is by Bernini. In it is a St. Thomas de Villanova,
