Fig. 11. Andreas Schluter and Workshop, Detail of Stucco Putti Group from the Ceiling of the
Drap d’Or Kammer (c. 1700-1701/1708), formerly Berlin Stadtschloss, destroyed in World
War II, repr. Peschken, Wiesinger, Das konigliche Schlofi...
We can also look to Schluter’s superb architectural project the Wartenberg
Palais or Alte Post (1702-04) the faęades of which were once ornamented
with fine, tondo-reliefs depicting female, allegorical personifications holding
attributes carved in sandstone with the ones representing Time or Punc-
tuality and Prudence (figs. 12a-12b) being very interesting comparisons
for our examination in this instance.52 Moreover, depictions of an armil-
lary sphere (like that found on the Allegory of Time drawing) and a cir-
cular zodiac ring-band are found on two reliefs from the Sarcophagus of
Queen Sophie Charlotte of Prussia (1705), Berlin Cathedral.53 (figs. 13a-13b)
One relief with exceptionally fine and detailed representations of scientific
measuring-instruments from the Sarcophagus for Margrave Philipp Wilhelm
of Brandenburg-Schwedt (c. 1712-1715) in the Berlin Cathedral has been at-
tributed at least to Schluter’s direct influence if not executed from his own
preliminary drawings.54 (fig. 14)
At first glance, the Allegory of Time appears to present some qualities and
characteristics that might complicate a positive attribution to Andreas Schluter.
