the Berlin structure, the foundation on the north-faęade of the Marstall first
required additional strengthening so Griinberg prepared his initial designs,101
and fortunately these preliminary drawings for the building’s tower have sur-
vived until today to inform us more precisely about the location of the two
rooms which are most likely to be interesting to us in our examination: the
Academy’s conference room and library.102 (fig. 26) One more source giving
a further indication of these rooms’ location with notations of their designated
uses - especially in the second-storey - comes from an unpublished schematic
ground-plan included in correspondence probably dated around 26 July 1707
still preserved in the Academy’s archival files.103 Yet none of these sources give
any detailed information about the rooms’ interior decoration.
Most notably, it should be pointed out that during the extended con-
struction-period on the Academy building Andreas Schluter was chosen on
11 March 1701 to be among the first members of Academy of Sciences,104
owing to his talent, knowledge, and noteworthy contributions to the field
of architecture.105 However, later on, from the year 1707, he was no longer
actively present in the institution.106 Not long before this time, however, he may
