Charakterystycznym zjawiskiem jest to’ że także inni stolarze, choć nie
wyrażają aż tak krańcowych sądów i mają za sobą wcale liczne i często
wartościowe zespoły cyfrowanych okien, traktują je raczej jako pracę
bez większego znaczenia. O ile chętnie chwalą się „rzeźbionymi deskami”,
jak Władysław Rabiański, meblami, jak Franciszek Łukaszczyk Janioł, czy
pracami w metalu, jak Mieczysław Michalik, a za powód do dumy uważają
zbudowane przez siebie mechaniczne urządzenia warsztatowe, jak Józef
Rzepiszczak Miesiorz i Józef Wróbel, to pytani o cyfrowane okna czynią
wrażenie zakłopotanych i niedowierzających zainteresowaniu, jakie one
budzą. Traktują je jako coś czysto miejscowego, wsiowego, a więc i po-
śledniejszego.

The dialectal term "cyfrowane okna” may be translated as "embroidered Win-
dows”. The term is misleading because the techniąue used here is the appliąue.
Ornaments, cut out of plywood and painted white, are put on the window-panes.
Cottages in Podhale, Orawa, Zamagurze Spiskie, and Gorce were ornamented in
this way in the second and third ąuarter of the 20th century. The most numerous
and various ornaments are found in the borderland of Podhale and Zamagurze.
In the villages there the ornaments are mostly produced by self-taught country
carpenters. Two of them, Franciszek Łukaszczyk Janioł from Białka and Włady-
sław Wilczek Kowol from Groń have surpassed the rest in respect of the ąuantity
o: works. They also belong to the group of carpenters showing much creative
inrention. The two introduced many new motives in the embroidered Windows,
both invented by themselves and borrowed from various sources. While Franci-
szek Łukaszczyk repeated his moties many times in different patterns, Władysław
Wilczek in his successive works introduced new ideas, never coming back to them
again. They both exerted influence on others, and found many followers. On the
whole, these artisans do not attach great importance to their works and some
c: them — although not devoid of talent — refuse to produce them, considering
them a stupid and unpractical fashion.
