unacquainted with this distinction, or with the way

power of nature is unobserved, as it rises into the
sublime, softens into the beautiful, or varies in the
picturesque.
By this knowledge alone we can trace the pro-
gress of loveliness, with improving observation, or
mark the deviation into deformity, and avoid it in
