SECTION VIII.

The Choice of Lines.

XT remains to make a few remarks on the stile, or
manner of giving expression to Position, by Lines; that
truth, and a neat description, performed with expedi-
tion, may be acquired from Nature.

This subject must be considered as applying itself to
the four distinct parts, viz. Landscape, Flowers, Heads
or Portrait, and Figures; which divisions, separately
treated, will be short, as the following Rules extend to
all.

Rule i. Few and distinct Lines are to be preferred,
provided they give a decided representation of Nature.

Rule 2. The distinction of Character, and property
of Objects, should be presented with as much effect as
possible, but not to appear studied.

Rule 3. An Angular Appearance, even acuteness by
Lines, produces the degrees of expression; while grace-
fulness is given by proportionate Curves. Circumstances
in nature alone can direct the choice in either.
