As the Author s intention through the preceding Work
has been to open in the mind new sources of rational plea-
sure, to inspire more perfect ideas of the productions of
nature, to form the most correct judgment of beauty, and
to determine the principles of design, by understanding ap-
pearances and their representation y so it is also accompanied
by the most liberal wish for every advancement of the science,
without a desire to conceal what may be found incorrect, or
to frame any excuse for deficiency in this attempt.

As evening shade, obscuring, joins to day,
So error mingles with the works of men:
E'en in the search of truth attends unseen.
Let knowledge then impart its friendly ray,
Light up the dark, and point the devious way.
