In the common things of use, it has an improving
effect on the mind to add beauty and elegance to
convenience, which gives attention to appearance,
and delight to the understanding; but every thing
that contributes to the discovery of proportion, is of
the greatest consequence.

Relative proportion is the basis of every art and
science; the more it is considered, the more in-
viting will be the subject: in the representation of
visible objects it is an essential part.

Musick is a science founded on the same principle of
quantity as drawing; but perhaps improvement in the
use of sight, is more generally necessary than in that
of hearing : our judgment almost of every thing is
formed by it; whilst we are awake, something pre-
sents itself continually to our observation; so that
every information to direct it, is of great value.
And sight requires an additional information,
from the alteration which takes place in appearance
by distance, or from change of place by the ob-
server.
