But Drawing communicates an universal acquaint-
ance with every visible object, and gives a certain
degree of possession; for by this means an appear-
ance can be retained, and as perfectly as the re-
flection of an object is presented on a mirror: it
has much more power, it can characterize ideas,
which nothing else could explain; and this, in a
language as general as the power of sight.

By this means, we view in safety, what the tra-
veller discovered with danger ; and retain for poste-
rity the appearance of objects which time has long
since destroyed.

While it is indispensible in naval and military
arrangements, the construction of machines, im-
provements in articles of use; and in the con-
venience of our dwellings, the disposition of our
garden and land, can only be given by this means.

How must we lament the want of this serviceable
power to retain those bright ideas which have blazed
