SECTION III.

FROM NATURE.

1 HE following difficulties occur in making an ac-
curate Copy of Nature; vfz. that the large scale may
disturb the judgment, or the colour and shade puzzle
the appearance; the latter of which, by changing, does,
in some degree, alter the look of the scene, and may, at
first, even deceive in the Proportion.

Again, when the Proportion and Position are ascer-
tained, it is required to form Lines so appropriated
to the Appearance, as to mark character and properties
with the figure—to give the effect distance—and, with-
out shadowing, to express the place of shade by a
skilfully graduated breadth of Line.

But these are all trifling difficulties, which, with a
little perseverance will vanish; and practice establish
a manner —the original and peculiar taste of every
one —that will give their works value and pleasing
novelty.
