A general breadth of Line, universal in shadowed
masses, is good relief to parts suddenly enlightened.
Lines that form the shape of bright parts should be
few, but accurately descriptive.
For particular properties, as water, a determinate Line
repeated, gives the effect.
The figure, and general appearance of trees, with their
own specific character, should be attended to; hut in as
unobserved a manner, and by as few Lines as possible;
such circumstances are not to appear studied.
Long and neat Lines must correctly determine the form
of hills, or turn of roads, and should receive some slight
increase of strength for shade.
Some particular part, requiring to be distinguished
from the rest, may receive an additional effect of shadow,
by passing connected Oblique Lines over it.
Flowers.
A judicious exchange of strength and lightness is ne-
cessary almost in every Line ; and these subjects consist-
ing principally of Curves, much attention should be paid
to their freedom and agreeable proportion.
Neat Lines, with sudden strength, must describe that
thin texture, which is a character in many Flowers.
