Phillips says: This second edition the same as the first, but apparently
printed from new plates, though the only difference is that p. 113 in the 1597 edition
is numbered 117 in this edition.
But T i e 1 e says: Sommige exemplaren hebben: Lovanii, typis Ger. Rivii....

This atlas is of such an importance that Phillips mentions it in the Prefatory
Note. There and under No. 1140 he says: ,The earliest distinctively
american atlas. It is as important in the history of the
early cartography of the new world, as Ptolem y’s maps
are in the study of the old’.
Pt. 1 contains an account of the history, the geography, natural history, and eth-
nology of the New World. Pt. 2 contains the following maps interspersed with ex-
planatory text:
Orbis terrarum — Australis terra et Chica (showing also Nova Guine a)—
Chili—Plata-—Brasilia—Peruuia—Castilla aurifera—Residuum terrae firmae sive
Paria et Cubagua—Hispaniola—Cuba et Jamaica—Jucatana regio —Hispania
Nova—Nova Granata et California—Anian et Quiuira—Conibas Regio—Florida-
Virginia—Noua Francia et Canada—Estotilandia et Laboratoris terra.
Fine complete copy of this rare edition. In the beginning
there are wormholes in the text till p. 92. The maps are in a very clean and fresh state
of preservation. Only in the margins of the maps 1,18 and 19 there are a few worm-
holes. With Book-plate of the count of Chorinsky.
