cana 18. Brunet I, 771: ‘Volume très rare.’ One of the earliest and finest
productions of Aldus’ press. The book is printed in an excellent roman type, recalling
Jensons’s type in an earlier period. ‘Il n’est ni moins rare ni moins beau Que
l’Ætna.’ (Renouard). The book is also very interesting for its medical description
of the battle of Fornoue: ‘Aless. Benedetti, médecin très habile, fut un de ceux qui
par ses observations, et plusieurs écrits d’une très bonne latinité, contribua le plus
à dégager la science médicale et anatomique de l’espèce d’esclavage dans lequel la
retenoient les doctrines erronées des médecins Arabes. Ayant été employé dans cette
guerre en qualité de médecin, c’est comme témoin oculaire, qu’il fait les récits dont
se compose ce précieux volume’ ( Renouard).
At the end of the volume 4 Ivs. of Pomponius Laetus, Romanae historiae
compendium, Venice, B. Venetus, 1499 (H. 9830), giving the life of Pomponius, are
joined. With bookplate and the entry: Bp. Butler’s copy. A very fine and large
copy of a very rare and interesting book.
