Ad I ; Scarce, unknown to C i c o g n a r a. This is the third edition, again greatly
enlarged. The above copy contains after the 3rd book the cancelled title, dated 1588.
The first edition contains only one book, the second two, and the third and fourth
six further books. The second book describes a surveying instrument invented by the
author. (Zeitlinger).
Ad II ; This is a very interesting work, not only for the part on fortification, which
is highly praised by Marini, but for containing descriptions of many new instruments
and machines. Riccardi complains that he cannot understand how Brunet could have
omitted to mention such a rare and valuable work.
Of great interest is a description of a breechloading gun (pp. 125—27) which is said
to be much in use in galleys for its greater convenience. Book V is very interesting,
containing copious descriptions of machinery, which include water-raising engines, a
powder-mill, a dredging machine, a rope-way for- rapidly removing earth, a diving
bell for subterraneous work, etc., etc. (Zeitlinger).
“Lorini eut une grande réputation pour la fortification et la défense des places ; il
fut employé par les rois de France et d’Espagne ainsi que par la seigneurie de
Venise.” (Biogr. Gén.) Very rare. — Ownership entry of Count of Nostitz on
title. Very fine copies in a nice original binding.
