Modern Painting in Sweden

1 A GRAY WINTER DAY BY ANTON GENBERG

It may be mentioned as
a curious fact that all the
artist - members of the
Academy, with the excep-
tion of Prince Eugen and
Bjorck, are also members
of this Society.

The best names, besides
the academicians already
mentioned, are the figure-
painters, Gustaf Ankar-
crona, Ivar Nyberg,
Wilhelm Smith, Emerik
Stenberg, Bernhard Oster-
man, and the " French "
member, Allan Osterlind
and Fanny Brate. These
are all young, but with
the exception of Smith and
Osterlind they all seem
to have " stopped their
growth," some of them
evidently for ever.

As this excellent artist is not called the " Red painters of winter, as is also Carl Johanson, while
Prince " for nothing, it is
hardly surprising to learn
that his leanings are all
in the direction of the
progressive "League."
With Bjorck it is the
same, consequently these
two eminent artists
usually ignore the exhibi-
tions arranged by the
Academy, whilst always
taking part as invited ex-
hibitors in the shows at
the "League."

The "Societyof Swedish
Artists" is a remark-
able mixture of talent
and mediocrity, of genius
and shallowness. It has
a great many members of
both sexes, among whom,
however, but a small
number are artists in the
true sense of the word.
