BRUSSELS—DALECARLIA
“DANTE." WOODCUT BY MAR-
GUERITE CALLET-CARCANO
BRUSSELS.— Marguerite Callet-Car-
cano is Italian by birth. Her mother
being an American, she resided in Boston
for some time and studied sculpture at the
Fine Art School of that city. Then, in
Italy, she worked for several years in the
studio of the well-known sculptor, Luigi
Secchi, occupying her time principally in
portrait work. She now lives in Brussels
and is chiefly known through her drawings
and wood engravings. She has been con-
siderably influenced by Fernand Khnopff,
the great Belgian painter, who died in 1921,
and owes much to his criticisms which
were a guide to her in her black and white
work. She has held several exhibitions in
Brussels, and has al o shown work at Rome
and at the International Exhibition, Venice.
We here reproduce a typical example of
her performance. 0000

DALECARLIA (Sweden).—M. Louis
Bourgeois-Borgex, three of whose
works we reproduce, is well known in
France as an exhibitor at the Salon, and is
not unknown in London, since he had some
paintings in the Goupil Gallery a few years
ago, and also held an exhibition at the
Turpin Gallery, Berners Street, which
gained for him the approbation of Mr.
Frank Brangwyn. 0000
The works which we reproduce form
part of a series executed in Sweden last
summer. M. Bourgeois-Borgex stayed at
Dalecarlia, on the banks of Lake Siljan,
where he was able to make a close study of
the Swedish character, which has remained
so picturesque in manners, buildings and
costume, above all in this region. 0
In the lower colour-plate may be seen
a farmyard with red-painted buildings
curiously reminiscent of Chinese and
Mongolian styles. In the other a large tree
overshadows a rustic dwelling, behind
which we catch a glimpse of distant fir-trees
and a corner of Lake Siljan. These paint-
ings are lively in colour and bear witness to
this artist’s preoccupation with form. 0
