Class 18: HEMISPHEROIDS
"Hemispheroid" is a conventional designation used here to classify seals published under a
variety of descriptive names: "Halbovoid", "Konoid", "flattened scaraboid", "low conoid",
"hemisphere" etc.
18a) large, ivory
CMS III 37-39, 58, 241, 313, 314; CS 31
total: 8
CMS III 38
CMS III 241
CMS III 314
CS 31
18a Hemispheroids are in ivory and their diameter and height average respectively 3.2 and
2.6 cms. The seals this subclass are relatively large. The backs of six examples are plain but
those of CMS III 241 and 314 are torsionally grooved. Except for CMS III 58, the base of
which is flat and ellipsoidal in plan, the bases of 18a Hemispheroids are flat and circular. In
their proportions the seals of this subclass are somewhat heterogeneous. The quality of workman-
ship is very good.
Decoration and dating
The motifs carved on large ivory Hemispheroids include rapport patterns composed of
leaves, interlace, meandroids, S- and composite spirals and a Vierpass. Two Hemispheroids are
assigned to the EM III-MM IA Parading Lions/Spiral Complex and two others to the EM III-
MM IA (-? ) Border/Leaf Complex. Two examples from stratified contexts provide further evi-
dence for the dating of this subclass:
CMS III 241 EM II-MM IB Platanos, Tholos A
313 EM II-MM I Platanos, Tholos T
The evidence of style and material suggests a tentative dating around the period EM III-MM IA
for 18a Hemispheroids although some examples may be slightly earlier or later.
18b) incised back/grooved base, soft materials
CM 155; CMS III 70, 96, 153, 403, 415; 112 83; IV 118; VII 210
total: 9
