rotation. The outlines of the leaves are echoed in the interstices by doubled V-forms. Although
this sealing design came to light in the MM IIB Phaistos deposit, the veined leaves are a motif
favored in the Prepalatial Period (cf. Motif 19:16). Furthermore, the tripartite division of the
field finds a parallel with a design from a MM I context. Thus, the original seal could possibly
predate MM II. Following MM II the Dreipass is not attested to in Aegean glyptic.

49: VIERPASSE

The Vierpass-motif is documented in about thirty-five early Cretan seal motifs. The specific
elements which form this motif are J- and S-hooks or petaloid loops (cf. no. 8). There are two
mam types of Vierpass: crossing and with connected coils. Vierpdsse generally appear as the
main motif but an exception is no. 12 in which two examples are placed in two of the quarters
of the field.

The Vierpass shown in no. 1 is carved on an ivory Hemispheroid which is tentatively datable
to EM II-MM IA largely on the grounds of the material. This motif consists of four S-hooks
on the periphery bound together and oriented on a center point by means of radiating S-hooks.
In no. 2 a Vierpass appears which is cut on a Quatrefoil-seal of the EM II-MM IA Quatrefoil
Group.

Nos. 3-5 are carved on seals of the EM III-MM IA Parading Lions/Spiral Complex. The dat-
ing of no. 5 is strengthened by the fact that the seal to which it belongs stems from an EM III-
MM IA context in Archanes. Both nos. 3 and 4 show Vierpdsse with crossed coils. No. 6, on a
6e Conoid attributed to the EM III-MM IA (-? ) Border/Leaf Complex, shows four leaves joined
to form a Vierpass.

The Vierpass shown in no. 7 is carved on a Prism-seal assigned to the MM IB-II Malia Work-
shop Complex. This motif consists of two J-hooks which branch off of a diagonal S-hook. Vier-
pdsse decorate the seals of this style-complex only rarely.

In no. 8 the Vierpass is formed by petaloid loops which spin off of an irregular ring. Where
the narrow ends of the loops touch, triangular cuts are made into the stone. Unfortunately noth-
ing is known of the provenance of the 19a Lentoid in soft stone which bears this motif. As the
motif is essentially the same as found on certain Classical Kamares vessels, MM II seems a reason-
able date for the seal and its motif.110

The finely engraved Vierpass in no. 9 occurs on a Petscbaft in hard stone assigned to the
MM II (-? ) Hieroglyphic Deposit Group. This motif is composed of four circles, joined by S-hooks
which are symmetrically oriented on a circle in the center. The hooks face the same direc-
tion and suggest a counter-clockwise rotation. Lines which radiate tangentially from the center
circle and the petaloid loops on the edge of the field suggest a rotation in the opposite direction.

No. 10 shows a Vierpass composed of four borings adjoined to four J-hooks. The Petscbaft
