Summary
Selected retablos of Teodoro Ramírez Peña as commentary on historical
events. Reflections
This article is dedicated to the work of Peruvian artist Teodoro Ramírez Peña.
A native of Ayacucho, he now lives in Huaycán, a town about 15 kilometers
east of Lima, and at the Academy of Fine Arts there he teaches practical classes
with students devoted to creating retablos ayacuchanos. Before the war, the ar-
tist worked in a traditional family workshop, and the subject matter of his reta-
blos was not unlike other similar artworks. However, the experience of war was
so strong for him that the themes of armed conflict and the visualization of vio-
lence begin to dominate his works. Peru’s civil war ended in 2000, but its effects
are still visible in society today, and this has not escaped the artist’s attention.
Through his works, he not only commented on the events of the war, but also
addressed current social problems that are a consequence of the now historic ar-
med actions.

Wybrane retablos Teodora Ramireza Pefli jako komentarz wydarzeń histo-
rycznych. Refleksje
Niniejszy artykuł został poświęcony pracom peruwiańskiego artysty Teodora
Ramireza Peñi. Pochodzi on z Ayacucho, obecnie mieszka w Huaycán, mia-
steczku oddalonym około 15 km na wschód od Limy, i na tamtejszej Akade-
mii Sztuk Pięknych prowadzi ze studentami zajęcia praktyczne, poświęcone
tworzeniu retablos ayacuchanos. Przed wojną artysta pracował w tradycyjnym
rodzinnym warsztacie, a tematyka jego retablos nie odbiegała od innych, po-
dobnych dzieł sztuki. Jednak doświadczenia wojenne były dla niego tak silne,
że tematyka konfliktu zbrojnego i wizualizacja przemocy zaczyna dominować
w jego pracach. Wojna domowa w Peru skończyła się w 2000 roku, jednak jej
efekty widoczne są w społeczeństwie do dzisiaj, co nie uszło uwagi artysty. Po-
przez swoje prace Peña nie tylko komentuje wydarzenia wojenne, ale również
odnosi się do aktualnych problemów społecznych, które są konsekwencją histo-
rycznych już działań zbrojnych.
