die Urkunden nicht, wie früher es geschehen ist,

geprüften Materials vorzunehmen. Es war dies ein
Fortschritt, auf dem die führende Stellung der deut-
schen Geschichtswissenschaft beruht. Sollen aber die

für die Kunstwissenschaft gewinnen, müssen sie
denselben Weg einschlagen.
Daraus ergibt sich aber naturgemäss die Grup-
pierung des zu veröffentlichenden Materials, die m
erster Linie nach zwei Gesichtspunkten erfolgen
muss, nämlich nach der sachlichen und chronolo-
gischen Zusammengehörigkeit. Denn wie man der
modernen historischen Methode gemäss nicht etwa
Urkunden, chronikalische Quellen, Gesetze als ein
buntes Sammelsurium veröffentlichen kann, sondern
bestimmte Grundkategorien, die eine gleichmässige
kritische Behandlung gestatten, den Publikationen
zu Grunde legt, so sind auch den Publikationen
der Kunstdenkmale sachlich möglichst homogene
Gruppen, bei welchen einheitliche Stilkriterien
vorhanden sind, zu Grunde zu legen. Anderseits

The enormous advance that the Ai<97272777277/27 G2272222-

publications of historical documents lay in the fact
that the publication was based on the entirety of
relevant, critically scrutinised material and was not,
as had formerly been the case, simply a collection
of reprinted documents. Germany's present leading
position in the historical sciences is based on this

cance for art scholarship.
The obvious conséquence of this is that the ma-
terial to be published will in the hrst instance have
to be grouped according to two criteria, námely the
objective and the chronological. If a publication of
documents, chronicles or laws is to follow the pre-
cepts of modern historical method, it cannot simply
be a colourful conglomération of sources; it has to
be based on clearly dehned fundamental categories
which facilitate consistent critical treatment. Like-
wise, the publication of artistic monuments is to be
based on subject groups that are as homogenous as
possible and represent distinct stylistic categories.
On the other hand, the prerequisite of any system-
atic publication is that the monuments be published
in chronological groups, for this is the only way to
investigate and bring out those factors that dépend
