Herode36 or the Legend of St Thomas37 as well as the illustrations of various romans courtois e.g.
the Legend of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table38.

The right of using the "Navarre-France" coat of arms was vested exclusively in the offsprings
of Philippe IV Le Bel. This juxtaposition appears on the miniature showing Joinville offering
the Life of St Louis to Louis X Le Hutin, the oldest son of Philippe IV Le Bel (fig. 13) who was
knighted by his father in the gown with the Navarre coat of arms (fig. 14)39. He was represented
once more in such a dress on a miniature of the beginning of the XlVth century (before 1308)
showing Philippe IV Le Bel with all his children (even with l'Enfant Robert "qui in annis puer-
ilibus est defunctus") : Le Hutin, the King of Navarre, and Isabelle, the Queen of England are
sitting at their father's side (fig. 15)40.

Charles IV Le Bel was the youngest of Philippe's sons, the last Capetian entitled to the "Na-
varre-France" coat of arms. He inherited the throne of France after the death of his brother
Philippe V Le Long, the King of France and Navarre, who formeily debared Jeanne, the daughter
of Le Hutin, the crown of her father on the strenght of the Salic law. Charles had no sons. His
