to say that a religion which ignored the
virtuous life, ‘the eight stages of the path of
holiness ’ could not lead a man to attain the
state of eternal peace. Subhadara was the
last convert the Budhisttwa made.
The dying teacher then turned to Ananda
and said that they should not think their
teacher was gone, but let the law and rules
of the order be a teacher to them after his
death. He then gave some instructions as
to the manner in which the members of the
order should behave with one another, and
called upon any one who had some doubt or
misgiving to have it removed, £ lest they
should afterwards regret not having asked
when they had opportunity.’ But none came
forward ; and the saviour told them that all
those who had been converted would arrive
