CHAPTER X.
Conclusion.
^Iave ^ec^’ in the foregoing chapters, to
give the reader a complete idea of the
personality and the work of Gautama Buddha;
what remains now is to show the futility of
some more objections that are urged against
him and to fix his place amongst the world’s
reformers or heroes.
The first main point, that is urged against
Buddha and his salvation army, is that they
were a multitude of idlers. Whether there is
a grain of truth in this criticism shall appear
from some of the following “ achievements of
this inactive Buddha.”
(1) Buddha was the first man to declare
that the salvation of an individual could be

worked out by him and him alone ; to hire a
Brahman to keep fasts for oneself, or to ap-
point a substitute for worshipping the Al-
mighty would do no good.
(2) The key to the kingdom of God was
to be sought for in the immortal principles of
