commencement of his life as a religious
hermit till his first return to
Kapilvastu.
looks not a little strange that Gautama who
^was born in the midst of every kind of prosperity
and pleasure and who posessed every thing that a
mortal on this earth can aspire to have, determined
to leave his royal parents, his loving and beautiful
consort, his princely wealth and power to become
a poor and wandering mendicant. A royal house-
hold like his, and a charming and noble partner
like, Yasiidlvra are the zenith of the world’s enjoy-
ment. He had a full share of both ; still he felt
a secret yearning in his heart for something yet
to be realised. This idea- which constantly rankled
like a thorn in his bosom oppressed him much, and
he now felt sure that the realisation of it lay be-
yond the domain of appetite and passion. It is,
