between his first and second visits to
Kapilvastu.
ftajagrih was the the capital of Magadh—one
of the most flourishing and powerful kingdoms
in the eastern valley of the Ganges. This beauti-
ful city lay in the midst of a pleasant valley,
surrounded by five hills, and presented to the
eye a very charming scene. The ruler of the
kingdom, at the time we are speaking of, was
Bimbisara.
Some Brahman ascetics lived in a cave, at
some distance from the metropolis, and there,
remote from the din of the city, “they ran,”
what they thought, “their godly race.” They *
were renowned for their contemplation and holi-
ness, and practised the rudest form of HutYoga,
once highly prized by the Hindus, and still pre-
valent among some sects of Indian Rishis I
